Three Blessings from Jesus

The Feast of Tabernacles, John 7:1-10:21

Following are three blessings from the Lord Jesus which he gave in John 7:1-10:21. During the Feast of Tabernacles the Jews gathered in Jerusalem and lived in tents celebrating the 40 years they wandered in the desert between Egypt and Canaan when they lived in tents. The points I have listed further below were said by Jesus in the context of that feast or shortly thereafter.

But let us look at some background first:

1.                  To those who left Egypt and entered the desert of the Sinai were given rivers of physical water miraculously from the rock, but rivers of living water never flowed from within them. Caleb and Joshua were the exceptions.

2.                  They were freed miraculously from physical slavery in Egypt and in spite of all the truth they received at Sinai they fell in the desert slaves to sin. Again Caleb and Joshua were the exceptions.

3.                  God’s miraculous plan was to have them enter Canaan, crossing Jordan on dry ground, overcoming many enemies in the land, and live an abundant life, but they fell short of it in the desert. Caleb and Joshua were the exceptions.

As believers we need to hold on to the truths Jesus declared so as not to fall into the same spiritual errors brought on by the sin of unbelief (Hebrews 7:3-13).

I.          Jesus promised that rivers of living water, referring to the Holy Spirit,  would flow from within us who believe in him (7:37-39).

38  " ... Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him." 39  By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive (NIV).

II.          John 8:31, 32 The truth frees us, which is what Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him.

31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32  Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (NIV)."

III.         John 10:10 Jesus came to give us a full (abundant) life.

10    " ... I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full (NIV)."
